Materials and Craftsmanship
We choose 18K gold for our fine jewellery as it offers the ideal combination of purity and strength. With 750 parts per 1000 being pure gold, and the remaining 250 parts made up of metal alloys such as copper or nickel (depending on the colour of the gold), 18K gold ensures your piece is of the highest quality and built to last.

Design and Features
Renderings are computer-assisted designs that provide an idea of how a piece will look once crafted. We use renderings across our website along with images of actual pieces we have created.
It’s important to note that renderings are used only as a guide and may not perfectly match the colours of real gemstones or show inclusions. Please consider renderings as an approximation of the final piece, and feel free to contact our team if you have any questions.
Wed-fit is a design feature for rings where they are set slightly higher on the finger, allowing a wedding band to fit flush underneath it. This ensures a seamless and comfortable fit when wearing both rings together.

Frequently Asked Questions
Gemstones
Origin and Quality
We have stringent sourcing parameters regarding the country of origin for our gemstones. As a result, we issue in-house certificates for all rings with gemstones 5mm or larger, stating the gemstone’s country of origin.
We do not label our gemstones with specific quality gradings, as these gradings are not standardized across the industry and can mean different things to different professionals.
Each of our gemstones follows unique quality parameters because every gemstone is inherently different. When grading gemstones on lab reports, gemmologists assess characteristics such as colour (e.g., Mid Blue) and clarity (e.g., Eye Clean).
Below are some common grading terms and their meanings:
- Eye Clean: No inclusions visible to the unaided eye from a 10cm distance.
- Loupe Clean: No large inclusions visible when viewed through a loupe at 10x magnification.
- Slightly Included: Some inclusions visible when viewing the stone from any distance.
- Included: A large number of inclusions visible from any distance.
- Light Oiling: Specifically for emeralds, this is a normal treatment where we use organic cedarwood oil.
- Heated: Commonly used for sapphires, this treatment is normal and stable, meaning it will not change in appearance over time. No other chemicals are used in the heating process.
AAA grading is a subjective label that is not standardised across the industry, meaning it can represent different qualities to different professionals.
At LEGEM, we prefer to provide transparency by clearly stating the true quality grading of your stone, ensuring you know exactly what you are receiving.
Measurements and Treatments
All gemstones are hand-cut, so while one stone may have the same length and width as another, their depths can vary, resulting in different carat weights.
Additionally, gemstones have different densities. For example, a sapphire with the same shape, cut, and dimensions as an emerald will not have the same carat weight. Therefore, using dimensions provides a more accurate representation of the gemstone’s size.
LEGEM only works with natural coloured gemstones treated according to the highest jewellery and gemstone industry standards.
- Sapphires: Our sapphires are typically heat treated to enhance their colour intensity and reduce inclusions. This treatment does not involve any other chemicals and is stable, meaning the appearance of the gemstone will not change over time.
- Emeralds: Our emeralds may undergo oiling to improve their clarity. We use colourless, organic cedarwood oil, which does not negatively affect the gemstone over time. Occasionally, emeralds may need reoiling to restore their original luster. You can contact our sales team for a consultation regarding this service.
Inclusions are the historic and geological remnants of what occurs in the ground when a gemstone is formed. They are visible features inside gemstones, often mistaken for "blemishes," "cracks," or "marks."
We appreciate inclusions as they tell the unique story of your gemstone. Different gemstones exhibit different types of inclusions. For example:
- Emeralds: Typically show more inclusions than most other gemstones, often in the form of wispy feathers, small metallic crystals, or tiny surface-reaching fractures.
- Blue Sapphires: May display "fingerprints" or light colour zoning, which is a slight difference in colour intensity within the stone.
- Emerald Cuts: These cuts make inclusions more visible due to their design, which does not hide internal features.

Cost and Comparisons
Our coloured gemstone and diamond pieces are sold as a whole, and we do not offer a price breakdown.
The cost of our settings fluctuates depending on metal prices, currency exchange rates, our partner relationships, the location of the setting, and the complexity of the centre stone. We do not sell individual settings without a centre stone, except in rare cases and usually as part of an aftercare service. Our setting prices are calculated with the assumption that they will be paired with a centre stone, and we aim to provide quality and value above the wider UK market.
Additionally, the dimensions of our settings and accent stones will vary between diamond and gemstone sizes, making direct comparisons difficult.
The suitability of a gemstone for daily wear depends on your lifestyle. If you are very hands-on day to day, we recommend a sapphire or diamond for their durability.
If you choose an emerald, please be mindful of the care guidance we offer to ensure your gemstone remains safe and well-maintained for years to come.
It is normal for gemstones to gather small scratches or abrasions over time. These can typically be polished out. As long as they do not threaten the structural integrity of the gemstone, consider these marks as signs that your piece is well-loved.
Gemstone crystals are all unique in the way they grow. For example, two different blue sapphires share the same chemical identity. However, depending on where they grow, they may have different concentrations of chemicals that make them blue. These variations in concentration result in one stone being lighter, the other darker, and each having a completely unique distribution of inclusions inside.
Care and Maintenance
Generally speaking, no. Our aquamarines may appear to change over time only due to dirt buildup on and behind the gemstone, often from soap or moisturiser, which can give the stone a "cloudy" look and reduce its clarity and sparkle.
To clean your aquamarine, soak it in some lukewarm soapy water to soften the dirt, then gently scrub with a toothbrush. We recommend using a child's toothbrush or one made from bamboo as the bristles are softer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Naturally Mined Diamonds
Quality and Certification
Our diamonds are available in a range of colour and clarity gradings. Our standard quality diamonds are G/H colour and VS clarity. We can source higher quality diamonds upon request and at a premium.
We thoroughly vet the country of origin for our naturally mined diamonds, which may limit the number of diamonds we offer on our website.
Kimberley Certificates do not accompany individual diamonds. The United Nations Kimberley Process includes a set of warranties that cover the diamond's journey from rough form through to tracing its origin during the cutting stage.
Each supplier must guarantee to their clients that their diamonds comply with the Kimberley Process by stating the Kimberley Statement on their invoices. It is the responsibility of the retailer to ensure the diamonds they source are from reputable suppliers who can prove they follow the Kimberley Process.
Following best practices of all luxury retailers, we provide certifications from GIA (Gemological Institute of America), IGI (International Gemological Institute), and HRD (Hoge Raad voor Diamant). These certifications are widely accepted and respected in the diamond and fine jewellery industry.
Stock and Customisation
All our products are made to order with an average lead time of 4-6 weeks. However, we do keep a selection of bestsellers in store for customers who would like to see pieces in person or who have an urgent deadline. These pieces are available for purchase, but please note that volume is limited. Our quality standards are the same across every piece we make.
We are always happy to explore this as a bespoke piece for you. However, please note that coloured natural diamonds are rare, especially from our list of approved countries, and they typically come with a significant premium.
As part of our bespoke offering, we can certainly look into and provide a quote for a fancy-shaped diamond piece. We have strong partnerships with suppliers in India, which allows us to source unique diamonds. As a result, we do not display fancy shapes available on the website. Please get in touch with your request if you wish to discuss the bespoke route.
To the unaided eye, most of these diamond attributes are not visible. You can view these details for each diamond offered on our website. However, we are unable to cut or source a specific percentage request as this is determined by diamond cutters at the source, who decide the faceting and angles based on the rough crystal itself.
Pricing and Comparison
Please send us the information you are seeing elsewhere so we can compare like for like. We craft our pieces in ateliers in Mauritius and India, both renowned for their rich history of jewellery production. Unlike many of our competitors, our pieces are not mass-produced in countries like China.
Each piece of jewellery is hand-assembled, ensuring exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail. This dedication to quality allows us to stand out among our competition, as we care about the quality of the entire piece, not just the stone alone.
Each diamond is accompanied by a certificate (GIA, HRD, IGI) and typically has an inscription of the certificate number on the girdle (side) of the diamond. These certificates are provided for your reference and to ensure you can correctly insure your LEGEM piece.
Please note that certificates are typically only issued for diamonds of approximately 0.30 carats and above, according to industry standards. Therefore, certificates will not be provided for accent diamonds that are smaller than this.
We price our diamonds competitively with our peers. However, we prioritise offering the best customer experience when purchasing such a valuable piece. Shopping for a naturally mined diamond can be overwhelming due to the many options available. While we strive to provide a wide range of choices, our goal is to make your experience with us as smooth and comprehensive as possible.
Our approach ensures that each piece is crafted with the highest standards, combining the stone and setting seamlessly to provide exceptional quality and value.
Certainly! Please reach out to our Sales team with the certificate number of the diamond in question, and they would be happy to provide this information.
Viewing and Selection
We do not offer in-person viewings of diamonds that we do not hold in stock. However, for the diamonds we have in our possession, in-person viewings can be arranged.
For diamonds not held in stock, we can send you options with accompanying photos and videos of 2-3 diamond choices within your specifications. Please note that we can only hold these diamonds with a deposit. Once you have selected a diamond from the provided options, it will become non-exchangeable and non-refundable.
As we are a direct-to-consumer brand, nearly all of our pieces are Made to Order. This means that once you have created your perfect piece using our customiser, we source your specific gemstone and craft your ring around it. During this process, the ring is shown to you as a CAD rendering, keeping the final piece a surprise until the big day when you collect or receive your delivery!
As a reminder, for all standard Made to Order pieces, you have a returns window. Please see our Returns and Exchanges page for your specific terms and conditions.
To the unaided eye, it is nearly impossible to differentiate between a lab-grown diamond and a natural diamond. However, natural diamonds are valued for their rarity and unique formation process over billions of years, which often makes them more desirable and valuable compared to lab-grown diamonds.
All of our naturally mined diamonds have a laser inscription on the girdle, allowing us to accurately identify and verify the individual diamond you purchased. This ensures you receive the exact diamond you selected.
No, if you are looking for something not listed on our website, please get in touch with us and we will discuss your options. We can source diamonds that meet your specific requirements.
General Questions
Lab-grown diamonds are created in a controlled environment and do not rely on the natural geological processes that form natural diamonds. They avoid the immense costs associated with natural mining, cutting, and import/export. These factors contribute to the price difference between the two gemstones. The price difference is not due to the quality or stability of the diamonds, as both types are chemically identical.
We have a 15-day refund window for naturally mined diamond jewellery.
- The ring must be unworn, and the diamond must be checked for the inscription under a microscope before the refund is approved.
- The ring must be returned within the 15-day window; it will not be accepted if the process is only initiated within the 15 days.
- Refunds will not be issued for diamond jewellery without accompanying certificates.
- Bespoke, resized, and worn items will not be eligible for exchange.
Please head to our Returns & Exchanges page for more in-depth details on our returns policy.
